After months of “making do” with a temporary setup, I’ve finally made some massive leaps toward true off-grid independence. From securing the galley for heavy seas to finally testing the limits of my new power bank, this week has been a total game changer.
Check out the full video below to see the installation and testing in action:
🧺 The “Tiny” Laundry Experiment
I recently had a friend gift me a tiny portable washing machine. I was excited to see if it would simplify life on board, but after a few honest tests, the results were surprising.
While the machine is a neat gadget, I found that washing laundry in a bucket by hand is actually:
- Faster: No setup or cycle time.
- More Economic: It uses significantly less water, which is gold when you’re off-grid.
It’s a good reminder that sometimes the simplest “old school” methods are still the most efficient for life on the water.
🛠️ Galley Transformation: The Fridge Finally Has a Home
If you’ve been following the build, you know my fridge was sitting on the countertop. It was a terrible solution. Even though I had it secured, the door was a constant worry—during a heal while sailing, there was always the risk of it swinging open and launching my groceries across the cabin. Plus, I had zero counter space for cooking!
The Solution: I finally took a saw to the galley cabinetry. I modified the lower cabinet to house the fridge permanently.
- Safety: It’s now rock-solid and won’t budge regardless of the weather.
- Space: I’ve reclaimed my entire countertop for meal prep.
- Aesthetics: The galley finally looks like a finished kitchen rather than a construction zone.
⚡ The Data is In: 600Ah Lithium Review
Two weeks ago, I made the jump to Lithium (LiFePO4), and I finally have enough data to see how the system performs. To put it simply: The power anxiety is dead.
I’m running two 300Ah batteries, giving me a massive 600Ah of capacity. Even though my solar array is relatively small (700W peak, usually seeing around 600W), the efficiency of the Lithium chemistry handles it beautifully.
The “Lifestyle” Results:
Before (Lead Acid/AGM) | Now (Lithium)
Coffee Machine: Fear of regular inverter shutdown – Use it anytime without worry
Fridge/Freezer: Constant monitoring – Stays on 24/7
Voltage Drop: Significant under load – Stays rock solid
Cooking: Gas only (mostly) – Can use electrical appliances
As long as the sun comes up and keeps shining every day, I have sufficient power for all my needs. It’s a level of freedom I didn’t think was possible with my current solar setup.
Final Thoughts
Upgrading the boat is a marathon, not a sprint. But seeing the galley come together and feeling the reliability of the new power system makes every bit of hard work worth it.
What’s next? Now that I have the power, I’m looking at water maker solutions. Most likely this will be another DIY project sometime in the future.
