Sometimes, boat life takes you on adventures you didn’t exactly plan — and this one was a perfect example. Sometimes you get interrupted from life on anchor and work on the projects, turning into an island passage between Curaçao and Bonaire.

The real reason behind the trip was simple, yet almost ridiculous. My time on Curaçao was about to reach six months — the limit before I’d have to either leave the island or pay import taxes on the boat. Since paying taxes wasn’t exactly in my budget, there was only one smart move: sail away for a bit.

So I turned on my engine, left my anchorage, and pointed the bow toward Bonaire. The sea was calm, the wind gentle, and for a while, it felt like one of those perfect Caribbean sailing days. Just me, the ocean, and the rhythm of the boat gliding through blue water.

Once I reached Bonaire, I picked up a buoy and and enjoyed the peaceful scenery — a short but refreshing break from the dock. But plans at sea always have their own ideas. The wind started shifting, and the good weather window started to turn and winds increasing slowly, so I decided to sail back to Curaçao sooner than planned.

It wasn’t a long trip, but it reminded me why I love this life — the freedom, the simplicity, and the constant balance between planning and letting go. Every crossing, no matter how small, is another step toward mastering both the sea and yourself.

Sometimes, the most practical decisions lead to the most memorable adventures.
